Trip arm

All stop signals (those capable of showing a red aspect) have an associated trip arm, which is raised when a red aspect is shown. Should a train pass a signal with the trip arm raised, it will come into contact with an arm on the train causing an emergency application of the trains brakes.
These trip arms are also used to enforce speed limits in places such as terminating platforms - and are then referred to as 'sleeping policemen'.
